The Booth Centre

The Booth Centre is a day centre that offers activities, advice and support to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The centre provides support to enable people to find new homes, improve their health, increase their skills and confidence and to successfully resettle in the community. They empower people to tackle the problems which led to their homelessness and to rebuild a positive and productive life.

The Booth Centre aims:

  • To provide a welcoming and accepting environment for people who are homeless

  • To empower people to make informed choices to enable them to make positive changes to their lives

  • To provide positive experiences to help build self-respect and self-confidence and to look to the future.

They do this through:

  • Running café advice sessions, which are safe, open and accessible

  • Providing advice to help people to resolve their problems

  • Organising activities that are creative, educational, therapeutic, healthy, challenging and enjoyable and giving people the chance to work for nationally recognaised qualifications

  • Giving people help to move on to education, training, employment and positive recreational activities in the community.

ROB.

A few years ago I split up with my wife and lost my job. It was all around the same time as when my mum and dad passed away, so I just struggled to cope with life. I was mixing with the wrong people, I couldn't pay my bills and eventually I became homeless.

At first I was sleeping on the streets which was horrible and quite scary. Then I just seemed to move from hostel to hostel, it was no life, I felt so insecure.

Someone I met told me to go to the Booth Centre to get some help, so I did and I can honestly say it turned my life around.

At first I was just going for a hot drink and breakfast, but then I started to make friends and join in with their activites like music and art. The staff at the Booth Centre helped me find a flat of my own so I didn't

have to live in hostels or shared houses anymore. I joined the Booth Centre job club and attended weekely training sessions which helped me write a CV and improve my computer and interview skills. I have managed to gain qualifications that I never would have been able to do if it wasn't for the free sessions at the Booth Centre.

Before Christmas I had an interview for a job as a warehouse operative  with an online retailer. The project worker at the Booth Centre helped me prepare for the interview and I got the Job!

I feel great now, it feels like I've won the lottery. I have got my own flat and new job to help me pay my bills. I was out of work for 10 years, so I couldn't have done this without the help of the Booth Centre. This place feels like a second home, it makes me feel safe. I'm really looking forward to the future and living happily, I feel more secure than ever.
